Henrietta was combing her hair, looking in the mirror. That night she was having dinner with Mary, Miles, and Annie. Frequently, they gathered on the Larsons’ patio for food and drinks—times Henrietta cherished.

She went to the kitchen to check the roast. The doorbell rang, and Henrietta put down her oven mitts. She opened the front door and saw Mary, dressed in the latest fashion of the time. With a big smile on her face, she said, “Henrietta, you look radiant.” Mary went to the kitchen and retrieved a bottle of wine from the refrigerator. She opened it and poured two glasses. “Cheers. To us.”

“To us.” Henrietta clinked her glass with Mary’s.

“Hello,” Miles said. Behind him, a petite, short-haired, blonde woman waved.

“Oh, hi, you two. Dinner will be ready soon. Help yourself to some wine,” Henrietta said.

Mary got everyone settled at the table and took a sip from her glass. “See Henrietta, this will be more fun than that stuffy function the Larsons invited you to. All those rich people from Los Angeles are there as well as the town snobs. Why don’t we play some cards?”

Everyone agreed since this was one of their favorite activities. Mary dealt the cards and passed them out. Henrietta shuffled her hand and said, “Miles, tonight we’re playing nickel ante.”

They began playing, and Miles put in a few dimes.

“Show off,” Mary said. “I’m going to get you.”

“We’ll see about that,” Miles replied.

Mary looked over at Annie. “You look a little sad. What can I do to cheer you up?”

“More of this,” Annie said, taking a sip of her wine. “I went to the doctor because I was bleeding. It turns out I was pregnant but was unable to carry the baby. The doctor said it’s likely we’ll never have our own children, so I guess we’ll be spoiling Andrew from now on.”

“I’m so sorry to hear that,” Mary said.

“How about you, Mary?” Annie asked. “Do you want children someday?”

“I’m not sure. First, I want to travel and explore. New York City is grand.”

“I moved here the day I met Miles because I wanted out of the big city,” Annie said. “It’s so peaceful here, a perfect place to raise a family.”

Henrietta laid down her cards, looked at Miles, and said, “You’re bluffing. I raise you 10 more cents.”

“Oh yeah? We’ll see about that. I’ll raise you an additional quarter dollar.”

“Deal, but I’ll raise you 50 cents.”

“Ah, shucks!” Miles exclaimed, putting his hand face up. Henrietta collected the pot, and Mary dealt another round. Henrietta won a second time. The kitchen timer went off, and she served everyone dinner. Afterward, Henrietta got another chilled bottle of wine and poured some for each of them.

Annie turned to Henrietta. “I saw Andrew riding his bike in town the other day. How old is he now? He looks like a nice, young man.”

“Thank you. Andrew is 15, but he acts like he’s 40. I was hoping he’d make some friends, but he never brings anyone home. The Larson boys say he’s weird, and it makes me sad because he’s such a nice boy.
